Project Description
The Cagliari-Oristano railway line forms part of the Sardinian railway network, which extends for 430 km of standard gauge railway lines.
The project represents a strategic step in the modernisation of regional rail transport, introducing for the first time the electrification of a railway line in Sardinia.
The project includes the installation of the overhead contact line system for new electric trains and the construction of the associated power supply infrastructure over a total length of 95 km, together with the construction of six new electrical substations.
The railway section involved extends for 50 km of double track between Cagliari and San Gavino and a further 45 km of single track between San Gavino and Oristano.
Electrification will enable the introduction of electric rolling stock with higher performance compared with the diesel trains currently in operation, improving speed, acceleration and service quality. The project will also deliver significant environmental benefits by reducing emissions and the overall environmental impact of railway transport across the region.
Scope of Work
The Euro Ferroviaria–Salcef joint venture, part of the Salcef Group, is responsible for:
- electrification of 95 km of railway line, including 50 km of double track between Cagliari and San Gavino and 45 km of single track between San Gavino and Oristano
- construction of six new electrical substations, including civil works and electrical installations
- installation of two 5,400 kW converter units in each substation
- construction of substations located at Cagliari, Decimomannu, Villasor, San Gavino, Marrubiu and Oristano stations
