Project Description
The Catania Rail Link (referred to in official documents as the Catania Node) is undergoing a major upgrading programme, including track doubling, construction of new stations and development of a new underground alignment along the urban section of the Messina–Siracusa railway line, which includes Catania Central Station.
The project is part of the wider upgrading of the Messina–Catania–Palermo corridor, a strategic rail corridor for mobility in Sicily. It is one of the major infrastructure projects monitored under the MGO – Major Works Monitoring programme due to its relevance to the regional transport system.
Salcef Group is responsible for track works and railway systems, including overhead contact line equipment, signalling, telecommunications and a traction power substation.
The works include the installation of 21,567 metres of track, of which 1,832 metres in tunnel, and the installation of 41 turnouts. The scope also comprises the installation of the third track at Fontanarossa station.
Scope of Work
- Construction of a double-track underground section beneath the Fontanarossa Airport runway
- Reinstatement of the Catania–Siracusa connection through a new single-track branch
- New single-track connection between Siracusa and Palermo
- Construction of a new arrivals/departures yard
- Development of a freight terminal within the Bicocca yard, connected to the Siracusa line
