BIM and the FAST System for the renewal of tracks 1 and 2 East at one of Europe’s major railway hubs
The renewal of tracks 1 and 2 East at Roma Termini Station represents a significant case study in the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the railway sector.
The intervention, carried out by Salcef Group, involved replacing the traditional ballasted track with the FAST System, a precast slab-track solution developed internally by the Group.
In a highly complex environment such as one of Europe’s primary railway hubs — characterized by spatial constraints, interference with existing structures and the need to maintain continuous railway operations — BIM played a decisive role, enabling a coordinated, digital and highly accurate approach to project delivery.
From 3D survey to integrated information model
The process began with a high-precision laser-scanner survey, which reconstructed the existing conditions through a high-density point cloud with millimetre accuracy.
These data formed the basis for developing an integrated 3D BIM model, bringing together all the disciplines involved — structures, MEP systems, trackwork and civil works.
Through parametric modelling, it was possible to analyse potential clashes between the new FAST precast slabs and existing structures, identify optimal solutions and ensure a fully coordinated and construction-ready project.
Digital control during construction
During the execution phase, the BIM model supported continuous monitoring of the works, enabling real-time verification of slab installation as well as the planimetric and altimetric alignment of the track.
The ongoing comparison between the digital model and the actual site conditions ensured accurate quality control, reduced the need for revisions and facilitated more efficient management of construction activities.
BIM and innovation for a more efficient railway infrastructure
The Roma Termini project clearly demonstrates the advantages of integrating BIM with the FAST System: an approach that combines design precision, construction efficiency and long-term sustainability.
This methodology marks a new frontier for the railway sector and highlights how digitalization has become a decisive factor in delivering safer, more efficient and higher-performing infrastructure.
