Project Description

The project was awarded to Salcef after an international tender launched by the Egyptian National Railways and financed by the World Bank within the “Egyptian National Railways Restructuring Program”.
Work was carried out on a fully mechanised worksite, including a renewal train, ballast-cleaning machine, tamping machines, a dynamic stabiliser and profiling machine.

In order to supply the sleepers provided in the contract, Salcef set up a factory in Cairo to produce pre-stressed monoblock concrete sleepers in compliance with European standards, with a production rate of 20,000 sleepers per month.
Salcef also installed a self-produced welding plant in Cairo to manufacture Long Welded Rails (LWR) by flash butt welding machine, with a production rate of 33 km of LWR per month.

Scope of Work
  • Track renewal (substitution of rails and sleepers and ballast screening) of 290 km of the Cairo-Aswan line (standard gauge double track) spread over 13 sections
  • Renewal of 67 turnouts
  • Procurement of concrete sleepers and ballast
  • Production of LWR by flash butt welding in workshop
