ERTMS in central Italy

A new contract has been signed to implement the ERTMS system in central Italy.
Salcef S.p.A., together with the Temporary Grouping of Companies of which it is a member, Â was awarded the third ‘Centro‘ Â (Centre) lot of the multi-technology tender launched by RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) to design and implement ERTMS (the European Rail Transport Management System), the most advanced system for the supervision and control of train spacing and related systems.
The tender, financed by funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, is worth 2.7 billion euros and will impact a total of approximately 4,220 km of railway lines in Italy.
The contract for the ‘Centro‘ lot includes work on around 530 km of lines and has a total value of 323 million euros, around 28% of which belongs to the Salcef Group and is destined for multidisciplinary activities.
Adopting the ERTMS system will enhance cross-border interoperability, improve performance in terms of reliability and greater punctuality of trains and save energy, thanks to optimal regulation of train speed, acceleration and braking. Eliminating the old signalling systems will also have a positive impact on the landscape.
