The project is part of the modernization programme of the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) network and covers selected corridors north and east of Cairo.

The works involve the rehabilitation of approximately 300 kilometres of railway track and the renewal of 200 turnouts. The scope includes main line track renewal with ballast cleaning, full track renewal within station areas, renewal of level crossings and the construction of a Long Welded Rail (LWR) welding plant.

The sections included in the project are as follows:

• Cairo – Alexandria line: 187.7 km of main line track, 10.1 km of siding track, 84 turnouts and 35 level crossings
• Qabbary – Matrouh line: 2 km of siding track, 13 turnouts and 1 level crossing
• Mansoura – Matariyyah line: 1.5 km of siding track and 6 turnouts
• Nefisha – Suez line: 8.1 km of main line track, 11.7 km of siding track, 50 turnouts and 6 level crossings
• Adabia – El Ain Sukhna line: 10 km of main line track, 1 km of siding track, 1 turnout and 4 level crossings

Cairo (Ain Shams) – Suez line: 53.1 km of main line track, 14.6 km of siding track, 46 turnouts and 11 level crossings
